Guide to Automatic Pool Chemical Monitors

Jules the Pool Girl

Taking care of commercial pools takes a lot of time, patience, knowledge, and hard work. We are responsible for the proper operation and safety of the water and the bathers. Our tasks include things like making sure the pool  equipment is working properly and repairing or replacing as needed. We need to make sure handrails and ladders are secured. We need to keep our ADA chair lifts working. I recommend keeping an extra battery so when it does go out, you aren’t at risk of your pool being closed. We need to keep the pool’s surface and mastic in good shape. We need life-saving items such as a buoy and safety hook. We may need trained lifeguards. Most importantly, we need to keep the water safe by ensuring proper water chemistry balance. We need to test, test, test the water often. We also need to keep logs of our water tests. Wow! With so much to do, it's no surprise we look for ways to make our jobs easier.

Automatic Pool Chemical Monitors

Benefits of Automatic Pool Chemical Monitors

One way we can do this is by using automatic pool chemical monitors. An automatic pool chemical monitor can be great for larger pools, spas and aquatic venues. Typically these systems have sensors included as well as commercial pool chemical controllers for automatic adjustment of water chemicals such as disinfectant (usually chlorine) and other chemicals. The pool is reliant on these sensors to obtain the water’s chemistry quality data. This data is then used to calculate out ideal amounts of chlorine, acid and even cyanuric acid.

Types of Automatic Pool Chemical monitors

Most automatic pool chemical monitors include ORP and pH sensors. These sensors are hooked up to a pH/mv controller. We rely on the ORP level for adjustments on chlorine and CYA. (Cyanuric Acid). We count on pH readings to determine if we need to raise with products such as sodium carbonate (soda ash), sodium bicarbonate (alkalinity up) or lower with muriatic acid (liquid acid). Some say these reduce the need for constant testing, which can be a hassle. Some models alert you on your phone if it is set up. But then what? It is not enough to have a system. You need to be aware of the status and action items, keeping the pool clean and safe. Be aware, these system logs can not be used for required record keeping in any State in the U.S. You have to physically be at the pool and test the water by hand.

An Easy and Affordable Automatic Pool Chemical Monitor

The Pool Shark H2O App gets you through that “last mile” getting you alerts and updates from the palm of your hand! When integrated with a Prominent DCM3 or DCM5 controller you are able to adjust the chlorine levels literally sitting at your desk. You don’t even have to be in the same State as the pool as the Pool Shark H2O App can work literally across the USA. This is a great advantage if you operate more than one property since the Pool Shark App allows for endless amounts of customizable pools. But wait! It gets better.

The Pool Shark H2O when paired with the LaMotte Spin Disc water tester can make your job even EASIER. Here is how. You take a small sample of pool water in the provided syringe. Squirt the water slowly into the desired disc up to the fill line. I say “desired: disc as there are several to choose from that test for different things. You then insert your spin disc into the Spin Lab. Wait only 60 seconds and BOOM! The water test results are immediately sent to any device you have the Pool Shark H2O App installed on.

Boss not ready to invest in digital testing? That’s fine for now, but many States are thinking of making it required. You may suggest he get ahead of the curve. Until then, you can still manually test the water with your reagent test kit. You can manually add your results into your Pool Shark App. Keep in mind that with reagent test kits you need to make sure you always have enough unexpired reagents. The readings are also left to the interpretation of colors. The LaMotte system is a colorimetric system that takes the guesswork out.

The Pool Shark H2O App saves you time in additional ways. Using the most accurate method of balancing water, The Langelier Saturation Index, proper chemical dosing requirements for your exact pool. No more reading product instructions or using the EZ Dosing Chart to figure out amounts. Figuring out the LSI (Langelier Saturation Index) by hand also takes time and brain energy.

As we previously mentioned, we need to keep logs of all of the water tests performed for YEARS. Old-fashioned paper logs can get lost, get wet or worse–go unused. The Pool Shark H2O App keeps digital water test logs. This saves time, money and storage space. If a health inspector were to come to your property or, heaven forbid, someone were to become ill and blame your body of water, any of your staff can easily pull up the digital logs on their device installed with Pool Shark H2O.

Other benefits include custom checklists to help you stay organized. Monitor not only your water, but your employees with geofencing. It even has helpful reminders such as when it is time to change out your VGB drains! Who has time to look for receipts of previous purchases or dive down and read the expiration date on the drain itself. No one, that’s who. You don’t have to live in the dark ages of pool water testing and logging anymore. Step into a new modern, easy, timesaving and money saving way of operating your swimming pool by combining the LaMotte Spin Lab and the Pool Shark H2O App. Pool Shark H2O to the rescue! See you poolside!
